Muse vs Meta AI: what’s the difference?
Both come from Meta, both run on Muse Spark, and since July 2026 both can take actions. But Muse and Meta AI are built for different jobs. Here’s a sourced, side-by-side comparison.
Quick answer
Muse and Meta AI are separate products from Meta that share the same family of AI models, Muse Spark. Meta AI is the assistant built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and the Meta AI app, and it’s free for everyday use. Muse is a standalone personal agent with its own app and its own private cloud computer. It takes on ongoing jobs, like tracking prices, handling email or running errands online, and keeps working after you close the app. Muse has its own plans (free, $20 or $100 a month).

The real difference: a job, not a chat
Meta AI is built around answering and helping inside the app you’re already in. Muse is built around taking on a job and seeing it through.
What makes that possible is Muse’s own computer. Each person’s Muse runs on a private, persistent cloud machine with a full browser, where it can work across websites and connected apps and continue in the background. A separate “Sentinel” agent checks what leaves that machine and asks you before sensitive steps.23 Meta doesn’t describe Meta AI running this way. There’s more detail in how Muse works.
The overlap is real, though. Since July 24, 2026, Meta AI can also make plans, connect to email and calendar apps, and handle tasks in some markets.5 So “Meta AI chats, Muse acts” is no longer the whole story. The difference is how far and how long each one goes.
When to use Meta AI and when to use Muse
| If you want to… | Better suited |

| Keep a long-running goal with progress tracking | Muse |
| Avoid paying anything and keep usage light | Either: both have free use |

Pricing: Meta One is not a Muse plan
Meta sells two different subscriptions, and they cover different things. Meta One (Core $7.99 or Premium $19.99 a month) adds more Meta AI image and video generation plus app features, and Meta says everyday Meta AI use stays free.6 Muse has its own Power ($20) and Maximum ($100) plans.7 Meta’s Meta One announcement doesn’t mention Muse agent usage. Full details are in our Muse pricing guide.
Can you use both?
Yes. Both use your Meta account, and WhatsApp can host both. Meta AI is built into WhatsApp, and Meta says you can also chat with Muse directly in WhatsApp.2 We’ll document exactly how the two appear side by side in WhatsApp once we’ve tested it on our own account.
