Muse vs ChatGPT: personal agent or all-purpose assistant?
Both can now take actions for you, and both cost $20 a month at the first paid level. But Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s ChatGPT are aimed at different jobs. Here’s a sourced side-by-side, including OpenAI’s new dots agents.
Quick answer
Choose Muse if you want a personal agent for everyday life, like handling email, booking, shopping and keeping track of things in the background, and you live in the US or Canada. Choose ChatGPT if you mainly want an all-purpose assistant for writing, research, analysis and work projects, or if you’re anywhere else in the world. Both start at $20 a month for the first paid plan. OpenAI’s new dots (September 29, 2026) are its closest match to Muse, but they’re limited to its $100-plus Pro plans and business plans so far.
About this page
Not testedThis comparison is based on Meta’s and OpenAI’s own announcements, pricing pages and help centers, checked October 1, 2026. Muse details also draw on our own account checks. We haven’t run the same tasks in both products yet. See how we label evidence.
The core difference
Muse is an agent first; ChatGPT is an assistant that has added agents.
- Muse is Meta’s personal AI agent. Each user gets a private cloud computer with its own browser, so Muse can work on goals in the background, use apps you connect, and ask you before actions like sending email or making purchases.110
- ChatGPT is OpenAI’s general assistant. Its agent features come in two forms:
- ChatGPT Work (July 9, 2026) takes action across your apps and files and “turn[s] a goal into finished work,” such as docs, sheets, slides and web apps. It can stay with a project for hours.6
- Dots (September 29, 2026) are “always-on agents,” each with its own cloud computer, that can work toward your goals around the clock and connect to over 4,000 apps through plugins.7
In practice, OpenAI’s examples for Work and dots are mostly professional (budgets, launches, sales proposals), while Meta’s are mostly personal (errands, bookings, shopping, your inbox).671

Pricing compared
At each step up, the prices line up closely.
- Free: both have free plans with limits. Muse shows its free limit only as “% used.”3 ChatGPT Free includes limited ChatGPT Work access in the desktop app.4
- $20 a month: Muse Power (500 million Muse tokens a week) or ChatGPT Plus, which adds Work on desktop, web and mobile.354
- $100 a month: Muse Maximum (3 billion tokens a week) or ChatGPT Pro 100. Dots are rolling out on Pro, so $100 is the entry price for OpenAI’s always-on agent.3137
- Above $100: ChatGPT also offers Pro 200 and Pro 500 ($500 includes “Ultrafast”). Muse has no plan above Maximum.13

Which should you use?
- Run errands and personal admin
- Muse. Inbox, calendar, bookings and shopping are its focus, and it keeps working in the background.
- Write, research or analyze
- ChatGPT. That’s its core, and Work turns it into finished docs, sheets and slides.
- Long work projects across Slack, Teams or Google Drive
- ChatGPT Work or dots, which OpenAI built and demonstrates for this.
- You live outside the US and Canada
- ChatGPT. Muse isn’t available to you yet. See Muse availability.
- You care most about agent safeguards
- Read both companies’ approaches. Both isolate the agent on its own cloud computer, keep passwords from the model and ask before risky actions. Muse’s record so far includes real security problems; see Is Muse safe?

Nothing stops you from using both: many people will keep ChatGPT for writing and research and try Muse for errands.
A warning about older comparisons
Many “Muse vs ChatGPT” articles compare Muse with “ChatGPT agent.” OpenAI’s Help Center now says ChatGPT agent “is no longer available” and directs users to ChatGPT Work.8 Comparisons written before dots launched on September 29 also miss OpenAI’s closest answer to Muse.7 Check the date on anything you read, including this page.
