How to turn off Meta Muse on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp

Many people searching “turn off Muse” are actually looking at one of three different Meta products. Here’s how to tell which one you’ve got, and the switch that turns each one off.

Muse isn’t built into Facebook or Instagram. The Muse agent lives in its own app, on muse.ai and in WhatsApp. So first check what you’re seeing: the AI chat inside Facebook, Instagram or Messenger is Meta AI (mute it; it can’t be fully removed); “Muse” image generation on Instagram was Muse Image, whose controversial feature Meta removed on July 10, 2026; and the Muse agent is turned off by disconnecting WhatsApp and apps in its Settings, resetting it, and uninstalling.

Turn off the Muse agent

Per MetaYou use Muse “in the Muse app on mobile, Mac, or directly in WhatsApp,” plus the web at muse.ai.1 To switch it off step by step:

  1. Disconnect WhatsAppTestedMuse → Menu → Settings → Messaging channels → WhatsApp → Disconnect. Details.
  2. Cut its link to Facebook, Instagram and ThreadsPer MetaThese three connect automatically when they’re in the same Accounts Center as your Meta account; manage them in Accounts Center.2 Disconnect other apps in Settings → Connectors.
  3. Stop AI trainingSettings → Data controls → turn off “Help improve our AI models.” How.

Mute Meta AI in Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp

ReportedMeta doesn’t offer a switch that removes Meta AI from its apps, but you can mute its chat: open the Meta AI chat, tap the i (info) icon, choose Mute and pick “Until I change it.” In WhatsApp, swipe the Meta AI chat, tap More, then Mute.4 Meta AI and Muse are different products: what’s the difference.

Stop Instagram photos being used by Muse Image

Per MetaMeta removed the Muse Image feature that let people create images from public Instagram accounts on July 10, 2026, saying it “missed the mark.”5 TestedOn October 5, Instagram’s Sharing and reuse settings on the web no longer showed an AI option. If your Instagram app still shows the July toggle (“Allow people to create with and reuse your content…”), turn off Posts and Reels. Full details.
