Why Muse can’t shop on Amazon
If you ask Muse to buy something on Amazon, it won’t get far. Amazon has blocked Meta’s agent since September 20, 2026. Here’s what you’ll see, why Amazon did it, and what to do instead.
Quick answer
Amazon is blocking Muse. Since Sunday, September 20, 2026, people who ask Muse to shop on Amazon have been stopped by a pop-up saying an “unauthorized AI agent” violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use. Amazon says Meta never told it Muse would use the store, the agent doesn’t identify itself as an AI, and it appears to store customers’ login details. It’s not a bug you can fix on your end. For now, buy on Amazon yourself, or have Muse shop at other retailers.
How we checked
TestedOn October 1, 2026, we asked Muse on our own account (muse.ai web app) to look up a price on Amazon, and told it not to add anything to a cart or buy anything. Muse reported that Amazon had blocked it. Everything else comes from Amazon’s statements to the press, GeekWire’s reporting and Meta’s own documents. See how we label evidence.
What you’ll see
ReportedWhen Muse tries to shop on Amazon.com, Amazon shows this message:1
“Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.”
GeekWire reported the message appearing by Sunday night, September 20, 2026, twelve days after Muse launched.1 Muse has no Amazon connector; it reaches Amazon through its own web browser, the same way it uses any site without an official integration.12
What happened when we tried it
TestedMuse couldn’t get into Amazon at all. We asked: “Go to amazon.com and look up the price of a USB-C cable. Don’t add anything to a cart or buy anything.” Muse started its browser, and within about 20 seconds it reported, in our translation, that “Amazon has blocked my automated browsing; the page isn’t loading at all, so I can’t see the prices.”
It then offered two choices: Try Amazon anyway, warning that the block or a bot check could come up again and that it wouldn’t try to solve a bot check, or Check another retailer instead, naming Walmart, Best Buy and Newegg. We chose neither and ended the test there. Nothing was added to a cart or bought.

Two things stood out. Muse told us plainly it was blocked instead of failing silently. And it said it wouldn’t try to get past a bot check, which fits Muse’s own terms (see below).
Why Amazon blocked Muse
ReportedAmazon gave three reasons, according to GeekWire:1
- No noticeMeta didn’t tell Amazon that Muse would access its store.
- No self-identificationThe agent doesn’t identify itself as an AI when it browses Amazon. Amazon says Muse can reach account pages and order history when a customer asks, which it describes as an undisclosed third party moving through customer accounts.
- CredentialsMuse appears to capture and store customer login details, which Amazon says could create privacy and security risks.
An Amazon spokesperson said third-party apps that buy on customers’ behalf “should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate.” Amazon also said it had asked Meta to remove Amazon from the Muse experience.1
What Meta says
Meta hasn’t published a response to the block; it didn’t comment to GeekWire the night it was reported.1 Its product page does address Amazon’s credential concern: Meta says your logins are kept in “a secure credential store your agent can’t read,” and that a one-time card number is generated at checkout so neither the merchant nor the agent sees your real card.2 Meta also says Muse asks you to approve actions like purchases, and that a separate monitoring agent called Sentinel checks what Muse sends to the internet.25
So the two companies disagree about a fact: Amazon says Muse appears to capture and store credentials, while Meta says those credentials are kept where the model can’t see them. Neither has published evidence that settles it. How Muse’s private computer and approvals work is explained in How Muse works.
Should you try a workaround?
No. Muse’s own terms of service say you may not use Muse in a way that would “violate, bypass or circumvent any third party’s terms of service, security, access controls” or technical protections.3 Amazon says Muse’s access breaks its Conditions of Use, so getting Muse past the block would put you on the wrong side of both companies’ terms. Muse’s terms also make you responsible for purchases it makes on your behalf.3
What to do instead
- Buy on Amazon yourself. Muse can still help with research elsewhere on the web, such as comparing products or prices. Make the Amazon purchase in Amazon’s own app or site.
- Shop at other retailers through Muse. Meta says Muse can use services without an official integration through its own browser, and generates a one-time card number at checkout.21 Some stores may block AI agents too.
- Watch for Meta’s shopping partners. At Connect 2026, Meta announced Walmart, Best Buy, Sephora, Gap, Wayfair, Ulta, Instacart and others as shopping partners.4 When we checked our account on September 30, they weren’t in the connector list yet. Our connectors tracker shows when they appear. ReportedBeing a named partner doesn’t guarantee access: NBC News reported on September 29 that in its tests some retailers blocked Muse, headlined as Amazon and Walmart.6 How checkout works: shopping with Muse.
- Keep approvals on for purchases. Whatever store you use, keep Muse asking before it buys. Our safety checklist shows the settings.
The bigger fight over AI shopping agents
ReportedMuse isn’t the first agent Amazon has pushed back on. According to GeekWire:1
- Amazon sued Perplexity over its Comet browser’s shopping agent and won a preliminary injunction in March 2026. On August 4, the Ninth Circuit ruled that the user, not the AI company, was the one accessing Amazon’s computers under federal anti-hacking law. It denied Amazon’s request for a rehearing on September 10.
- That ruling left Amazon a different route: claims based on contracts and terms of service. The message Muse users see cites Amazon’s Conditions of Use, not hacking.
- Amazon has also moved to block shopping agents from Google and OpenAI.
- Amazon runs its own agents. Alexa for Shopping (launched in May) researches products. Amazon’s “Buy for Me” buys from other brands’ sites, and Amazon points out that it identifies itself and lets brands opt out.
The underlying question is whether a store can refuse an AI agent that a customer sends on their own behalf. Courts haven’t settled it, and a deal between Amazon and Meta would make the question moot for Muse.
Will Amazon unblock Muse?
Unknown. On September 20, Amazon said it was in direct conversation with Meta, and declined to say whether it would take legal action.1 As of October 1, 2026, we found no announcement from either company that the block has changed. We re-check this page weekly and log changes in our Muse updates timeline.
