Muse explained

What is the Personal Agent Protocol?

On October 6, 2026, Meta and the AI company Sierra announced the Personal Agent Protocol. It’s an open standard for how personal AI agents like Muse talk to businesses, backed by Walmart, Stripe, Shopify and others. Here’s what it does, how it works and what’s still missing.

Quick answer

The Personal Agent Protocol is an open standard for how personal AI agents, like Meta’s Muse, deal with businesses. Meta and Sierra announced it on October 6, 2026, with Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart as partners. An agent starts as a guest. If the task needs your account, you sign in and choose whether the agent gets read-only or write access, using OAuth, the same sign-in standard behind “Sign in with Google.” The first draft, v0.1, is due later in October. Nothing changes for Muse users yet.

How we checked

Not testedThere’s no published specification to test yet. This page uses Sierra’s announcement and news reports, checked October 8, 2026. See how we label evidence.

The problem it’s meant to solve

AnnouncedSierra writes that “most personal agents use websites and apps the way people do — loading pages and clicking through forms,” which is slow and error-prone.1 ReportedBusinesses also struggle to tell whether a visitor is a person or an agent acting for one. CNBC reported the protocol is meant to verify that a bot acts for a real person and to show businesses what agents are doing.2 Sierra co-founder Bret Taylor told CNBC: “It is kind of chaos until such a standard exists.”2

How it works

  1. DiscoverAnnouncedThe agent finds what a business offers through its website.1
  2. Start as a guestWithout signing in, the agent can check things like stock or a returns policy.3
  3. Sign in, with your choice of accessIf the task needs your account, you sign in. “The customer is always in control, deciding whether the agent has read-only or write access.” The session is built on OAuth.1
  4. The business picks the routeEach company decides how agents reach it: its website, APIs built on standards such as MCP and OpenAPI, or its own customer-service agent.13

Who’s in, and who isn’t

  • AnnouncedFounding partners: Meta and Sierra, with Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart.1
  • AnnouncedMuse is already in the examples. Rocket, the mortgage company, says its agent technology, built with Sierra, “allows a Muse agent to move across our platform,” from finding a home to arranging financing.13
  • ReportedNot involved: CNBC reported that OpenAI and Anthropic aren’t part of it.2 Amazon isn’t on the partner list either, and it has blocked Muse from its store. Why Muse can’t shop on Amazon.
  • ReportedMeta’s David Singleton compared the goal to email, which “works great because it is a standard that everyone can use to talk to each other.”2

Status and what’s missing

What it means for Muse users

Today, Muse shops and fills in forms by using websites in its own browser, which is why tasks can be slow or get blocked. How Muse works. If partner businesses adopt the protocol, Muse could connect to them directly. You’d decide each time whether it can only look at your account or also make changes. Until the specification ships and companies adopt it, nothing changes, and Meta hasn’t said when Muse will use it.
